Giulia - Stelvio 2.2 JTD oil pressure, another piece of the puzzle found and solved!![]()

We have been putting efforts in the investigation and solutions to the oil pressure problems which are occuring at these 2.2 JTD engines, in some cases with complete engine failures as a result. Problems which were not known to the previous generation engines as the 1.9 and 1.6-2.0 JTD. Some people say the 2.2 JTD is a bad engine because of that. We don't think it's a bad design; does it has some flaws, yes it has, and if we can resolve these points we believe this can be a both powerful and reliable engine.![]()

So far we know the lip seal of the oil pump can wear down. The oil pump cover screws can get loose. And the manufacterers choice of eco oil that compromises protection against wear (the HTHS rating is an important one, as is ZDDP content)![]()

With these three issues taken car of at the Giulia JTD RWD test mule, somehow we still logged low oil pressure, but only during hard acceleration and in corners. The pressure was lowest in fast left corners. Typically what you would also have on a racing track. We carefully looked at the internals of the oil pan, especially at the placement of the oil suction tube and the internal structure. See below for the first photo with comments. We figured the oil pickup is not really centered in the oil bath, but placed towards the front. Also it's visible the pan is not symmetric, at the LH side the pan is caved in to provide room for the starter that sits next to it.![]()

So what happens under hard acceleration with the oil? It will move to the rear area of the pan. Compare it with the feeling of being pressed in your seat, it is the result of inertia. So during a left corner, the oil will flow to the right. And combine forward acceleration with a left corner and the oil will end up more towards the rear right corner of the pan. All this moving of the oil has a negative effect on the oil pressure. We know, using the Performance Logger we can log oil pressure but also G-forces.![]()

So to keep the oil as much as possible close to the oil pickup point, we made a baffle. We refined it, later we refined it some more, and the first prototype went into the company car a couple of weeks ago. And we can say; it works! There is less oil pressure drop during acceleration and cornering, stepping up the reliability with another notch. See the oil pressure graphs with and without baffle below.![]()
